March

OK, so I'm surfing as usual and I think of a time when all us rowdy boys wanted to chip in and buy a big sail boat and sail all over the world when I see it.

A sail boat...for sale...cheap!
It is a 1959 Van Dam. A 35' wooden boat that was fiber-glassed over in 1988. The current owner has had it since 1971 and has kept it in good shape and sailed her every year and even raced. He is moving out of the country and needs to just sell it. It seems to have a ton of new stuff on it like new sails and all new navigation equipment (he spent $10K on it last year). He say's paint the bottom and de-winterize it and you're ready to sail.

Phoenix gives me the ok to proceed with the inquiry. I had to stop him from buying a motorcycle so we could use the funds.
We hire a Marine Surveyor to take a look at it and give us his opinion. Captain Joe Davis is a wooden ship specialist as well as a real live captain. He was nice enough to try to give us a break on the price. Final cost $450US

The Survey comes back good, actually he said we would be stupid not to buy it. The fair market value is at least $25k+ and replacement value is $175K-$190K
The S/Y Caya is ours with the dingy for $5400US

Well we finally got all the papers shuffled around and Karl is leaving the country. Can you believe it, we actually bought a boat and we can't even sail! Since it is still cold up north we still have a little time before we are going up. Hopefully we will meet up with the previous owner when he comes back for a visit in early June.
