The photo below is Noah speeding his way up SuperChicken Hill.
When Phoenix took a crack at it he found himself being pulled into the deep snow on the edges. I was going to follow Phoenix up the hill but I saw he was heading into deeper snow so I turned around in case he got stuck and needed me to hike up and help dig him out. (we did a lot of snow digging that weekend in the 6+ foot of snow). The snow started sucking Phoenix towards a large outcropping of rocks with a steep drop-off and deep snow below.Well, Phoenix gave it the throttle in hopes of working his way out but when he hit the rocks at full force, it made him rocket out into space some 15+ feet off the ground! I thought to myself, "oh crap he's dead now!"

There wasn't anything below him, there was a huge drop-off but shockingly the whole snowmobile turned 90 degrees in mid-air! Don't ask me how, but I was there and saw it and still don't believe it! The strange thing is, that when he hit the rocks, he flew up in the air and though he was still hanging on to the handlebars, the rest of his body was not in contact with the machine anymore. When the snowmobile turned 90 degrees, Phoenix's body did not!
As the whole rig re-entered the atmosphere (well that's what it looked like to me) it came crashing down violently and Phoenix (who was not aligned with the seat anymore) came crashing down on the ground NEXT to the snowmobile! Still hanging on! Well if you know anything about motorcycles you know that the throttle operates by turning the handle backwards. Well, what do you think happened when his body landed on the ground next to the sled? That's right, FULL THROTTLE! He came down so fast, I mean, these things will do 80MPH! Well he's coming down the hill at Mach 9 or so and his poor body is just bouncing all over the place like a rag doll behind a car on the freeway. It was horrible to watch. My best friend being killed before my eyes, if he's not dead already, and there is nothing I can do to stop it. Bang, smash, bounce... all the way down. Then, I can see it coming, it's a really big bump, WHAM! They hit it full force and up goes the snowmobile, and up goes the lifeless body of Phoenix and when they touch down to earth again, they are ALIGNED! Amazingly the body and seat are once again together as if nothing was ever wrong. The screaming beast glides forward to a stop and Phoenix JUMPS off and throws his hands in the air. Yelling and dancing, kissing the ground. It was a sight to see! Not a scratch on him and obviously VERY happy to actually pull it off.
The snowmobile was fine too, mine had a few hundred dollars worth of damage from another accident that day, but that is another story too. |
